Relatively Safe Cleaning Agents

Cleaning

First step, cleaning! This is to remove any debris, which could deactivate disinfectants!

  • Soap and water to remove any organic debris

OR

  • Diluted white vinegar (about 5% acetic acid)

Mix 1 part to 1 part water to make a spray for cleaning. Increase contact time to remove tough dirt/stain

Disinfecting

Additional steps for disinfecting as needed. Remember, we live mostly in harmony with bacteria and fungi. Disinfecting may not be needed for general cleaning if there is low possibility of harmful pathogens.

Air the area well. Even though the disinfectants below will not leave toxic residues, fumes could be irritating to the airway! Wear gloves to protect your hands!

  • Diluted bleach solution (Made with 5-9% Sodium hypoclorite)

Approximately 20ml in a litre of cool water. Make it fresh each time and NEVER mix with other cleaning solution!!!

Contact time of 1 minute before cleaning it off.

OR

  • Hydrogen peroxide for cleaning (3% concentration)

Contact time of 6 minutes after spraying.

OR

  • Alcohol (70% Isopropyl alcohol or ethanol)

Contact time of at least 10 seconds.

Ammonium quaternary compounds, a common ingredient in most disinfectants due to its ability to kill most pathogens, is not our choice for general home use. This is because there have been reports of possible health and environmental implications that are currently being investigated.
